steps to the process

01

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

The concept development process for a commercial involves generating and refining creative ideas to form the foundation of the advertisement. It begins with gathering information about the target audience, the product or service being promoted, and the marketing objectives. Brainstorming sessions are conducted to generate a variety of ideas, from which the best concepts are selected. These concepts are then developed further, considering factors such as storytelling, visuals, and messaging.

Storyboards, scripts, and mood boards are created to provide a visual representation of the concept. The selected concept is then reviewed and refined, incorporating feedback from the client.

The concept development process ensures that the commercial's idea is compelling, aligns with the brand's image, and effectively communicates the desired message to the intended audience.

02

PRE-PRODUCTION

PRE-PRODUCTION

The pre-production process for a commercial involves all the planning and preparation that takes place before the actual filming begins. It starts with the initial concept development, where the creative team brainstorm ideas and create a script or storyboard. Next, the production team is assembled, including the cinematographer, camera team, and sound crew.

Locations are scouted, auditions are conducted, and the necessary permits and contracts are obtained. A production schedule is created, outlining the timeline for shooting.

Finally, any necessary props, costumes, or equipment are acquired, and rehearsals or test shots may be conducted depending on the budget. All these steps ensure that everything is in place before the cameras start rolling.

03

PRODUCTION

PRODUCTION

The production process for a commercial involves the actual filming of the spot. It begins with setting up the shooting location, ensuring that all the necessary equipment and props are in place. The director works closely with the production crew to capture the desired shots, directing the actors or models and ensuring that the script or storyboard is followed.

Lighting, sound, and camera angles are carefully considered to achieve the desired visual effects. Multiple takes may be required to get the perfect shot, and the production team works together to ensure that the footage meets the creative vision.

The production process is a collaborative effort, with everyone working together to bring the commercial to life.

04

POST-PRODUCTION

POST-PRODUCTION

The post-production process for a commercial is the stage where all the captured footage is edited and polished to create the final piece. It starts with sorting through the footage and selecting the best takes. The editor then pieces together the shots, adding any necessary visual effects, graphics, or animations. The audio is also edited, with background music, sound effects, and voiceovers synchronized with the visuals and mixed.

Color grading and correction are applied to ensure consistency and enhance the overall look of the commercial. The final edit is reviewed and approved by the client or creative team. Once approved, the commercial is rendered and exported into its final format for distribution, whether it be for television, online platforms, or other media channels. The post-production process is crucial in giving the commercial its polished and professional appearance.

WORK

01

LEVI STRAUSS | “WE ARE SAN FRANCISCO”

PROJECT: LEVI STRAUSS

BRIEF: Produce a short film to promote the launch of the new Levi’s x San Francisco 49’ers collab.

EXECUTION: The client knew they wanted to show a montage of various fans around the city of San Francisco and so we wanted to come up with a visual trend we could repeat over and over. This visual motif across all the stories would give the spot a natural flow and cohesion. We decided to shoot all of the scenes in slow-motion, utilizing a lot of camera moves on a slider to give it that floating, almost dreamy feeling. It became really important to see all walks of life and showcase every corner of the city, giving us a very diverse range of visual looks. This became a 4 day shoot in order to travel between all of the different areas of the city, including the brand new Levi’s Stadium. Once the visual motif was created, the scenes cut together really nicely and we wrapped it all up with a melodic music cue.

RUGGABLE “ | “GAME DAY”

PROJECT: RUGGABLE

BRIEF: Produce a :30 CTV commercial showcasing the new Ruggable x Collegiate Collection.

EXECUTION: The kernel of a concept the client had was to show a “montage of fans” that were celebrating their favorite football team while having their teams rug nearby. So Vitascope came up with a concept to start the spot with a party frozen in time, with drinks and food suspended in air, moments from crashing down onto the washable rug. Then we would cut to a montage of fans having parties around town and carelessly messing up their rugs. We then bookend the spot with the time freeze scene, and cut to real time to see the mess splash on the ground. The partiers then dance on the rug without a care in the world because the rug can be easily cleaned. This effect not only gave us a fun visual effect hook to the piece, it allowed us to tie the montage together and have a payoff at the end. We shot most of it with a steadicam to keep the camera constantly moving, giving it a very high-energy feel.

03

SLING | “DVR”

PROJECT: SLING

BRIEF: Produce a :30 CTV commercial showcasing the new features of a Sling subscription. .

EXECUTION: We wanted to base our concept around a family, and see how each person in the family uses their Sling membership. We came up with an idea to have our Dad character work as the “host” and take us around the house while we see various family members using their devices. We wanted the camera to be constantly moving, so the beginning of each scene starts with a steadicam move pushing towards the talent. This created a natural frenetic feeling to the piece as the Dad moves in and out of each room. We decided on a light “airy” look to the lighting so that the family home feels bright and welcoming. We selected popular shows like “The Walking Dead” to showcase on the character’s tablets and finished it off with a funny button with the wrestling scene to leave viewers with a haha. This piece was very successful for us and played in thousands of homes around the country.

04

GENESIS WORLDS | “TRAILER”

PROJECT: GENESIS WORLDS

BRIEF: Produce a trailer for a new NFT project and corresponding game.

EXECUTION: This project took a lot of imagination to create. We had access to these 3D planet models from the client and decided to create an entire galaxy filled with them as the camera, acting as a spaceship POV, travels around to each one. Getting the path of the spaceship right took a long time and we wanted it to feel like it was organically traveling to all of these worlds. Then we layered in a score that would have that sci-fi adventure feel to it, something similar to a John Williams score.
